Elizabeth Blackwell
Elizabeth Blackwell, born in 1821, was the first woman in the United States to receive a medical degree. She wrote and lecured on behalf of good personal hygiene and sanitary conditions as a way to prevent disease. She encountered much resistance from male doctors, but eventually gained accentance.
